The Group was formed in November 1982 from an idea of the late Mrs Shirley Beever, breeder of the Fendale Shetlands. The main object then was for the group to meet during the winter months, away from the ponies, without any competition of any sort. It was agreed at the first meeting that the group would endeavour to have two study meetings and one social lunch throughout the “year” which runs from October to April. The Social meeting and lunch would be open to members, their families and friends, whether resident in Yorkshire or not. The study meetings would be open to members only. The format of the group has changed slightly since the beginning as there are now members from all parts of the UK, the group now holds a Spring show and meets once during the summer. The group is run by all the members, with a Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary. It is open to ideas for guest speakers, demonstrators etc provided that it is of interest to Shetland owners and the fees are not too astronomical. By demand the meetings are on a Sunday afternoon, usually preceded by lunch. At present, the Group usually meets at the Owl Hotel, Hambleton, Nr Selby in North Yorkshire where it has its own room for the meal and the talk. The subscription is £5 per year payable at the Christmas lunch. This sum covers an entire household and goes to pay for stationery and stamps. The rest of the expenses are raised by holding raffles at the meetings and the Group is always grateful for donations of prizes. If you would like to join the Group, please contact the Secretary, Mrs Joy Barugh, details appear above.
