Flossie and Fivla

My name is Flossie Taylor and Im 10 years old. I drive a Shetland pony called Fivla of Finnister.

I drive coachman in my red cart with red harness and I can do both singles and pairs. I have been driving for three years and have competed as a driver and groom in the Viking Pony Show to come out with lots of rosettes. This year, I got 2nd place in the Exercise Vehicle Class against 4 adults and a few years ago at this show I was groom to Jo when she did the cone driving and left with 1st place. I have had loads of support from my parents and my instructor, Jo Tonkinson. When I was 8, I wrote a letter to the London store, Fortnum and Mason. They sent me a hamper with champagne and truffles in a wicker basket that I now use as my spares box. I drive Fivla a lot and I hope that we can improve for our next show.

We have owned Fivla ever since she was a baby and we used her in the riding school for beginners and small children. She is brilliant with kids because she is very tame, quiet and loveable. Everyone here at Thordale Shetland Driving Centre adores her.

Louise and Toffee

Toffee, (Redburn Radiance) had a bad time when she foaled last year, so she needed a lot of extra care and encouragement. Mrs. Helen Emslie's granddaughter, 12 year old Louise made sure that Toffee got the extra attention she needed to recover. As can be seen from the photos above, the two have become the best of friends.

Sammy and Apache

My name is Sammy Mitchell. I'm 7 and this is my pony. His name is Lynemore Apache and he is 5. We broke him in last year then he went to Pearl's riding school at Knockandhu for a month to bring him on so I could do some shows with him. I won 2nd prize at Turriff Show and also got prizes in young handlers classes. Apache has lived with us all his life. He is very friendly and easy to handle.

The 2nd picture is of me presenting Her Royal Highness Princess Anne with a posy of flowers at the Royal Northern Agricultural Society Spring Show as I was the youngest exhibitor there. I was showing Apache in the young handlers class and won 1st prize.

Lydia and Big Ben and Little Mac

Big Ben is from the Geldron stud in Voe (Benston Farrel). I am his 3rd owner - he is the chestnut pony. Next week we are going to a show. I do not mind if I do not win anything because I enjoy taking Big Ben to shows, it is good fun and Ben enjoys showing off.

Little Mac (Shangrila Mackason) was born in Bristol. He has not been to a show yet but he is very good so he will go to one next time. Mum is breaking Mac in at the moment and he will draw a small cart, he seems to be very happy going out and learning new things.

I adore my Shetland ponies, some people look down on them because they are small but Big Ben is really strong and can jump well. He likes being ridden in the forest - he can be a bit strong sometimes and bucks when he is excited but he is only 5 years old and a bit green so we are patient with him. Both my ponies are very confident and excellent in traffic. I hope to visit Shetland and see all the lovely ponies!
