The Shetland Pony Care and Management

Shetland Ponies by Valerie Russell
This book describes the foundations of the breed, and its history in the Shetlands. It charts the historic effects of the Mines Act, which inadvertently influenced the course of the breed. It then goes on to describe how the Shetland Pony story evolved in the 19th century. Written in 1997 this book will appeal to all as it covers a wide range of aspects relating to the pony.
The Shetland Pony by C & A Douglas
This book was originally printed in 1913, and has been reprinted in a limited edition of 400 copies for the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society. The Chapters include the Early History, the Pony in Shetland, the Modern Pony, Management of Pony Herds, the Pony at work, and the Making of the Shetland Pony.
A Century of Shetlands
Written to commemorate the Centenary of the breed in 1990, by Angela Gosling, a former Council member. It is a book of reminiscences and photographs of the breed, with the history and background of the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society.
Shetland Ponies from Shetland by Margaret Hunter
Published in 2000, this book studies the pit trade and American trade. It contains excerpts from letters discovered only recently and uses previously untapped material. A "must" for all interested in pony trading from the 19th century.

Details provided include sire, dam (names and Stud-Book numbers), colour, height, year foaled and breeder. Index 1 covers Stud-Book Volumes 1-29, Index 2 covers Vols. 30-66, Index 3 covers Vols. 67-92. A quick reference point for checking pedigrees.
Stud Books : Various Volumes available
Each Book provides details of that years registered foals, mares having first foals, stallions licensed and registered geldings. Changes of ownership, exports and imports, members list and principal show results are amongst the other areas covered for the year in question. Volume number = year + one i.e. Volume 101 covers year 2000 registrations, Volume 96 covers 1995.
